Beret Giveaway Day

The weather outside is starting to cool down here. So it seemed like a good time to offer a wintery type of giveaway.

I’ve got three copies of my new Dolce Beret pattern to give away. It comes in four sizes to fit from 2 year olds upwards, using DK weight for XS and S versions, and 10ply Worsted weight for the M and L versions.

I also have three copies of the Calvados Beret pattern up for grabs. This is a cabled beret pattern to fit an average adult woman’s head.

And… also one lucky person will win the large size Dolce Beret pictured above and below. It is knit in 100 Pure Wool 3 ply worsted yarn in the colourway Chocolate. It is super soft and cosy. Whether it is approaching winter where you live, or whether you’re just leaving it behind, if you’re anything like me, even the coldest day can be brightened by a snuggly hand knit to shield you against the weather.  This will certainly help you achieve this!

So, how do you enter the draw? Leave a comment on this post telling me what you enjoy most about winter in the place that you live.  Whether it’s your home, your town, or your country, what is the best part? I love living where I live because of the awesome winter time views I get of the mountain that’s almost in my backyard. The last time I saw it it was totally bare. But this was it this time last year.

So what’s your favourite part of winter? Leave a comment here by Saturday evening 10pm NZ time and you will be in the draw to win.

my favourite thing about winter is being able to dress my family in wool!!!! (means there’s a point to all my knitting lol)

also being warm inside but being able to hear a thunderstorm outside, torrential rain, lightening, thunder, as long as i’m inside and warm, i love it! 😀

  2. 2 Ali G May 17, 2010 at 11:08 pm

I’ve already bought the pattern, but commenting anyway! I love winter because it means I can sit all cosily on my couch with a view to the Southern Alps from my window and with the fire burning in the woodburner and not feel that I should be doing anything other than knitting and sipping tea! My house is very sunny and warm and so even when the weather is bitterly cold, my house is cosy and warm – specially so when the fire’s burning. Rain, snow, hail – I love it all when I’m safe inside 🙂

My fav part of winter , those clear days when you go out for a walk in all your woollies , kicking in puddles , swinging on swings and enjoying that clear crisp winter sunshine before coming back home to a warm fire , then snuggling down in the evenings in warm pjs reading books in the warm . Nice family times 🙂

My favourite thing about winter is driving up the mountain and seeing the look of absolute amazement on the girls’ faces when they see snow. You can’t beat it when a little person discovers how much fun it is to play on a carpet of snow. 🙂

  6. 6 Renee May 17, 2010 at 11:38 pm

my fav part of winter is having yummy hot chunky soup and toast for tea, also snuggling up with kids in bed on a cold morning.

I do miss watching it snow and playing in the snow 😦

  7. 7 Nel May 17, 2010 at 11:47 pm

My favourite part of winter is cooking yummy casseroles and stews and snuggling up withj my children to have movie marathons when the weather turns nasty, I love spending time together :0)
Gorgeous beret, I can see this on my almost 17 year old daughter who has discovered gorgeous hats and accessories/

I used to live in Michigan where winter falls during Christmas time, we use to go out Christmas tree picking and spend ages trying to find the perfect tree to cut down, trees would get marked with scarfs, hats and gloves… then when we would run out of ‘markers’ we would have to go back and pick the perfect tree out of the bunch of maybe’s… I can’t wait to see my kids experience the same thing…

Great patterns and thanks for the giveaway!

My favorite part of winter is waiting for the first snow fall so we can go play!!!! I have a total blast with my boys having snow ball fights and walking about town in love with the white fluffy coating that dusted our town the night before and then coming home to a toasty warm house and having hot chocolate ((yum!!))

  10. 10 Angela/noisybabe007 May 18, 2010 at 12:16 am

What I love best about winter is that the weather is rubbish a lot of the time, giving you no reason to go outside – and instead to indulge in knitting, crafting and DVD watching with the family – love it!

  11. 11 Angela May 18, 2010 at 12:17 am

    PS Love the pattern Sheryl!!

    Well done!

  12. 12 Heather May 18, 2010 at 12:18 am

Favourite part of winter is late evening. Snuggling with kids under blankets and watching DVDs of old tv programmes (BeWithched is the flavour of the week atm)

  13. 13 Caffeine Girl May 18, 2010 at 12:20 am

My absolute favorite thing about winter is being able to cross country skiing. When there’s enough snow I can just walk to the nearby golf course and put on my skis!

  14. 14 Joanne May 18, 2010 at 1:04 am

What do I love most about winter? Well I live in Canterbury; we can have some incredibly claggy wet winter days (all the better to wear the woolly layers!), but it’s the fine crisp clear winter days I love the most. I cannot do heat, but I love the cold. Those days are the best to dress up warmly and enjoy out stunning scenery – whatever direction you look or head, from the Southern Alps, to the sea.

  15. 15 Miss Marty May 18, 2010 at 1:30 am

What wonderful hats!!!! Beautiful work too. I would love to have a copy of either one to make up for my winter days and nights.

  16. 16 Jane May 18, 2010 at 4:31 am

Thanks for the giveaway! My favorite part of winter is the back yard ice rink my husband builds every year. We had a great season this winter!

  17. 17 Margaret May 18, 2010 at 7:46 am

I too have bought this pattern but i have to say as a winter baby i love this time of year. curling up on my swing seat on a nice crisp sunny winters day with the cat doing a few rows of knitting. or when catching the bus to town and seeing the snow on the hills on the outskirts of napier. nothing like a good view to inspire my knitting.

  18. 18 Hayley aka aezoey May 18, 2010 at 8:21 am

I love the snow and being “trapped” in the house. My kids, dogs, and my husband all snuggle down with books or movies, while I knit. I have made the kids scarves and blankets in the past but this year will be a little exciting because I just learned out knit a hat!! Made my first baby hat a few weeks ago. Hopefully my kids will have neat hats this winter!!

  19. 19 Amy May 18, 2010 at 8:56 am

pick me!!! lol, i love the dolce socks pattern aswell! the best thing about winter for me is snuggling on the couch and knitting wearing Dans sexy rugby socks hehe

  20. 20 Jodie May 18, 2010 at 9:08 am

I love sitting by the toasty warm fire while it’s cold and wet outside and I can knit more things that will get worn by my 2yr old. Also being able to go splash in the pudddles after it’s stopped raining (the kids and me..hehe)
I love your patterns and will buy them soon if i’m not lucky enough to win one.

  21. 21 Sharonnz May 18, 2010 at 9:13 am

The knitting mojo always returns with a vengeance in winter which is very satisfying in what can be a difficult season for my mental health;-) Miss “my” mountain though – jealous!

  22. 22 Rachelle Crosbie May 18, 2010 at 9:26 am

What I like most about winter is being able to knit with wool without being overheated; not that getting overheated stops me.

  23. 23 Jemma May 18, 2010 at 9:42 am

Hot lemon, honey and ginger drinks to accompany knitting would be my favourite part of winter. And lentil soup! And wearing scarves!

  24. 24 Julie May 18, 2010 at 10:52 am

I love being able to snuggle up in bed or in front of the fire. Also love making footprints in the frosted crunchy ground with the kids 🙂

  25. 25 Bloss May 18, 2010 at 10:53 am

What do I love about winter? Well, not that it’s quite winter yet, but this morning it’s chilly outside but looks like it’s going to be one of those ‘blue sky & sunshine’ days. We walked to school/kindy and I love going out in the fresh (but chilly) air and watching the kids blowing ‘smoke’ 😉 out of their mouths in wonder. Just this morning I was thinking “oh! the kids are going to need hats and gloves, I’ve better get knitting!” lol. And I love soups and casseroles in winter…. and I love it when there’s a smell in the air outside which brings back memories from when I was about 5 and living in Waiouru – I think it’s from everyone’s fires? But it’s not a smokey smell, it just reminds me of the snow and winters when I was 5 🙂
And I have the Dolce Beret pattern sitting in my Rav ‘checkout’ waiting for payday! lol

  26. 26 Julia aka j-j May 18, 2010 at 11:15 am

OMG Sheryl, I LOVE that brown beret so much – I need to knit me one me thinks – I’ve a bit of a brown thing at the mo.

Winter is my favourite season – I love the opportunity to snuggle up inside, bring out the cards and boardgames with the kids, sit in front of the fire with my knitting. All my domestic goddess stuff comes out (when I feel like it) – the baking, crockpot meals, homemade bread with soup and all the rest. I love that it’s ok to be a bit roly poly in winter as everyone puts on bulky woollen layers.

Congrats again Sheryl – great work on the patterns!

  27. 27 jennynz May 18, 2010 at 11:41 am

Um, winter in Auckland is just wet and muddy most years (not this year though, we are still coming out of a drought) so I’m struggling to find a favourite part! Knitting by the fire I guess, and watching thunderstorms over the water. There’s been lots of lightening this week actually!

  28. 28 Helena May 18, 2010 at 12:26 pm

I love winter here because it hopfully means rain. We don’t get enough rain in Adelaide so when it starts everyone gets happy and excited. It’s kind if the opposite to the SAD syndrome

  29. 29 KRISTY May 18, 2010 at 7:12 pm

My fav part of winter is snuggling up with a blanket when its raining outside and enjoying being inside out of the rain 🙂

  30. 30 Pipi May 18, 2010 at 7:54 pm

My favourite part of winter is when it is snowing, I get to settle down inside with the fire roaring, my knitting and enjoying my munchkins imaginations when they are playing.

  31. 31 Jen May 18, 2010 at 10:29 pm

I love taking my kids to the top the the hill behind our place to play in the snow and then come home and sit in front of the fire with hot chocolate. And to show off thier awesome knits of course! If I dont win a copy I’ll be buying it cause I think Miss Milly and Charlie girl will look super cute in it!

  32. 32 Jolene May 19, 2010 at 2:40 am

Being from Canada… I am very accustomed to winter! I love the clean white freshness that is everywhere after a snowstorm. After the clouds and flurries end, often there is a bright clear day. The sun reflects and bounces off of the fresh new snow 🙂

I really like your beret pattern… I have never knit a beret, but maybe this is a good time to start?

  33. 33 Amy V May 19, 2010 at 10:14 am

I love winter in Virginia because it is not too cold, but we usually get enough snow for sledding, which is my favorite!

  34. 34 kreachr May 19, 2010 at 10:15 am

My favourite part of winter? Gosh, where do I start??? Soups, casseroles, puddings, sitting on the couch watching movies snuggled under a blanket, a perfect excuse to sit inside and knit or spin or quilt, listening to the rain on the roof, cozy winter knits and coats, boots, snuggly socks (handknit of course!) and slippers, crisp mornings, refreshing cold air, living in the city where there’s no frost, but driving the kids to school and getting to point it out in the fields/cars/lawns on the way, scarves and cowls, going to a cafe after shopping in town and being able to strip off all the winter woolies for a while in a nice warm bustling environment for a coffee, then getting to wrap up again and head back out, fog rolling in off the ocean, seeing it wrap around the hills… you know what? I could go on forever, so perhaps I should just leave it there…

  35. 35 Janet Bestwick May 19, 2010 at 10:53 am

I love winter here in Nelson because we have such lovely frosty sunny days when you can see the golden sands with the snow capped mountains in the background….. truly blessed to live in such a wonderful part of the world.
Great work on your beret patterns… stuning

  36. 36 Littlefire May 19, 2010 at 12:59 pm

The best thing about winter in Ireland, and this is going to sound very strange, is the rain! I don’t think that anyone who lives here can really bring themselves to complain about it too heartily because it’s the rain that makes our island so lush and green and beautiful. So while it might be a pain to walk home in, it does a good job 🙂 And makes us really appreciate the dry days when they come, no matter how chilly they are!

Thanks for a great comp. and congrats on the beautiful pattern. I’m certain it’s going to be really popular.

I was doing a google search for ‘kiwiana’ and came across your site. Although I’m a sewer + crafter, I wish I was also a knitter [I think I’m too impatient!] Anyway, couldn’t resist entering your giveaway. The things I like about winter are; snuggling into a warm bed, hot chocolate with marshmallows, scarves, and in Hawkes Bay, no matter how cold it is, there’s always some other part of NZ that’s colder! 😉

  38. 38 KathyR May 19, 2010 at 4:03 pm

I love winter here because of the bellbirds which come down out of the bush for shelter – I love to hear the clear notes of their song which seem to ring out in the winter air. I also love the welcoming heat of the logburner when I come in from the bracing air outside. I like being able to be wrapped snugly in soft layers of wool to protect me from Jack Frost’s cold fingers on wintry mornings and then to shed those layers as the sun shines brightly after the frosty start to the day.

  39. 39 Julia May 19, 2010 at 8:30 pm

I agree with all of this! My favouite thing in winter is having the fire. Being able to come home from work when it is cold and raining and then walk into a warm house with the fire. Mmm and soup.
(I could’t resist posting, I really want to knit the Dolce :D)

  40. 40 JHCSMUM May 19, 2010 at 9:03 pm

I love the fresh chilly winter air on a crisp winters morning, watching the kids play sport, and snuggling in front of the wood fire watching movies with my family.

I love the Dolce Beret and have bought the pattern, but my knitting skills aren’t really up to it, so keen to get one knitted or win one 😉

  41. 41 Suzanne May 20, 2010 at 2:06 am

I live in Melbourne so it gets pretty cold here. Currently sitting at my lappy wondering why as we have NO heating at the moment so I should be snuggled in bed 😉 Anyway, fav thing about winter is all the yummy wool knitted items you can wear of course 😉 I love being able to sport my gear around town and also love that you can wear clothes that cover up a little more of my chocolate cake figure. I adore dressing my kids in knitted things also and love kissing my husband good bye for work sporting his knitted beanie 🙂 Nevermind the wedding ring, you know a man is taken when he wears hand knitted goods 😉

  42. 42 Kylie May 20, 2010 at 10:58 am

Hot showers, hot coffee and being enveloped by warmth coming inside from the cold. I would also say knitting in front of the fire, but we don’t have one. 😦

  43. 43 Kath May 20, 2010 at 4:45 pm

    You are one talented lady!!

I have a few favourite things about winter:
    – having a warm fire going
    – playing board games in the evenings
    – hot toast and milo after tea

But a new thing to add to my list would be what Mr 3 said to me this morning upon seeing fog – “mama it is all cloudy, the clouds have come down onto us” Bless 🙂 – I’m loving seeing things with fresh eyes again

  44. 44 Angela May 21, 2010 at 2:40 pm

Beanies, dads socks, casseroles, the fireplace, snuggling under rugs, hot coffee, the rain on the roof, big puffy jackets, steamed puddings with custard, kick-ass boots that go with everything, valid excuses not to go outside for a run, valid excuses to stay inside and knit, sleeping in a bit, porridge with brown sugar, the desert road, red wine.. blether blether blether, you get the picture 🙂

  45. 45 Lisa May 21, 2010 at 3:36 pm

Winter is my absolute fav season. I love that chill in the air and being warm inside with the heater blasting knitting away. My best winter day is when there’s a clear blue sky but it’s really chilly, so you can still walk rugged up if you want to. Luckily we get quite a few of those days in Wgtn 🙂

  46. 46 Janis May 22, 2010 at 5:29 pm

We are only 1 hours drive away from the ski fields, so I love this time of year because when DH comes home from work we take the kids up to the ski-field for a week, We hoof around on the snowboards and toboggins then *try* and iceskate. Best part is hanging out in the Hot-pools afterwards, while you try and make shapes with the frosty breath coming out your mouth 🙂
