Blogtober 12th: The one about the gateau

So, yesterday my parents in law arrived at our place for a flying visit. They had come up north for FIL’s aunt’s 80th birthday party, and then driven the 4ish hours across the centre of the North Island (By 10am!) to visit us before flying home this morning. Dedication!

Annnnyway, one thing that you have to understand about my PIL is that they are very generous. If we say we need something, they certainly try to get it for us. Another thing – they love to drink endless cups of tea. Our wee teapot gets a workout whenever they visit (message to self – should knit them a tea cosy for Christmas!) So, when they opened the tea bag caddy to discover one lonely teabag, well, it was never a story that would end well. We dipped into the Earl Grey stash and planned a supermarket expedition.

After a library excursion, DS and the grandparents were deputised to grab tea bags and a loaf of bread from the supermarket. Asked if we needed anything else, DH said “Cake! Chocolate cake. One of those big, creamy gateaux”. He was joking, of course. I knew that. He knew that. Did the PIL know that? I’m not sure – but you can see what they came home with. I really must teach DH not to joke like that!

This story does have a happy ending though – other than the obvious chocolatey, creamy, calorific one.

We went out for dinner. Sunday night. Two tables full in the restaurant. The worst service e.v.e.r.  I should have let the wee misses grump and scream and run about the place, we were left waiting 40 minutes for our garlic bread! Should have left then I guess, because then we needed to wait for our mains too – by which time neither wee one was up for a meal. So we had to scoff our dinners and take off. Back home to a massive gateau.  That, and thoughts of writing cross letters to the owners of the restaurant cheered us all up no end.
